Mount Saint Benedict
Trinidad’s Mount St. Benedict or the Abbey of Our Lady of Exile founded in October 1912 by an order of monks from Brazil, after the Order of St Benedict of Italy. It is a breathing climb up a mountain road though rain forest, in St. Augustine. The meandering road called St. John’s Road, can be navigated via auto to a mountain apex were we found a peace of Heaven.
The monastery is famous for its yogurt and also produces jams and jellies from fruits grown on the sprawling 600 acres of the mountain top compound. After an hour of Mass “on the mount” as locals refer to it, I ventured out of the Chapel to the beautifulness of the grounds with Fr Christopher Theunissen, where shooting Medium Format with my Nikon 800D was spectacular. We then traveled to a room in the Abby School, were Fr Christopher then, said a prayer giving me blessings, and proceeded to put a cross on my forehead using Holy Water. I asked him for a portrait shot or two, to complete the portfolio of the monastery, so I took photographs of him as he posed looking out of one the windows where the view was right into the clouds. it was a simple and pure as gets.
